Helping Kids Communicate Their Feelings
One of the first things that kids should learn for them to develop positive personalities is to communicate. Since birth they have several ways on how to tell what they feel through cooing, babbling, and crying. Though parents cannot understand what they are trying to say, their actions and expressions can tell. However, it is a different situation with a child is growing old. As he grows old the more questions he has in mind and you should be smart enough as a parent to explain the correct answer. Sometimes, kids ask questions impossible to answer because they are not yet aware of everything that is happening around them. In some cases, there are children who do not ask questions about what they feel, and what they see. As parents, it’s time to give attention to your kid especially if he doesn’t talk much about the way he feels about different things.
Communication is very important to children so that they can show very well what they really feel and they will not get confused. There are very different tips that you can use to help your child express his feelings. Children have different characteristics, and they differ with every aspect. There are children who are noisy, and there are also who are shy type. So if your child is a shy type make sure to talk to him constantly, and ask what he feels like when something happens. Like when someone teases him in school, and he seemed not to react. You should ask him what does he felt when other teased him. Teach your child different emotions and feelings according to his experiences, or give examples that he can observe. Give your child different classifications of emotions through explaining to him different situations. Also, it is great if you can see him in certain situations. Talking to your child and explaining to him what he should really feel about the situation.
Another tip is creating activities such as games that you can go together, so that you can provoke different feelings from your child. You can find different activities that you and your child can do online, and there are also different online games that you can play together. Knowing your child is the key to helping him communicate with his feelings. So as much as possible maximize your time with your children. Through doing different activities with them you will develop the bond as well as you can teach your kids how to handle their feelings and emotions and when or how to show it. Nevertheless, you don’t need those extra activities when you are personally raising your children, because you can watch every move they make and you know exactly how they communicate. You can also teach them first hand on how they are going to deal with their feelings.
Using books with stories they can easily understand is also one of the best ways to help your children communicate their feelings; focus on stories that portray different emotions. Explain to them further get their reaction or comments about the story. Teach them the negative and the positive side, and explain to them why. When dealing with preschoolers you can use pictures with faces of different emotions, let them identify or follow what is in the picture. This aspect of child growth may be hard for working parents since they do have limited time to spend and know their children well.
